The Anamorphic Illusions of Julian Beever

Pastel Illustration

Julian Beever is a pavement artist from the U.K. His work in general is amazing but what’s more incredible are the “anamorphic illusion” renderings he produces on walkways throughout the U.K., France, The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Australia and the U.S.

Anamorphic illusion images are drawn using a form of distortion that when viewed (or photographed) at a specific angle look like they are part of the scenery around them. The effect is wild, but artists will appreciate the work involved in distorting the image, shading and finishing it so that it appears “correct” at the specific angle and “feels” like part of its environment.

See some of his work on his site…

InfoWorld: Zombie makers turning to fake greeting cards

Great… one more legitimate marketing tool being exploited.

As an illustrator, animator and Flash developer, the “eCard” has been a great way to utilize and merge my three favorite things to do (and I’ve done so many times, just view my portfolio page for a few examples). I’m a big fan of Hallmark.com’s electronic greeting cards along with the many other services out there so reading this article (though I figured this would happen eventually) is rather disheartening.

All is not lost, of course. It’s just legitimate folks like us have to jump a few more hurdles to help our clients get their message out…

A Happy Disney Ending?

Happy boy imageI just got an email yesterday from the SaveDisney organization. It looks like Roy Disney is returning to the Disney board as consultant and Director Emeritus.

I first wrote about the troubles at Disney in this journal entry and promptly signed their online petition (something I don’t generally do) showing my support.

You can read Roy Disney’s announcement here and the press release here.

Let’s hope this is just the start of great things to come for the Disney organization!

Easy-peasy PHP

A great article on PHP from the folks at Digital Web Magazine that make it easier for those of us without a background in “hardcore” programming to understand how approachable and easy it is to use PHP.

Also, Friday, July 15 is WebVisions 2005 in Portland, Oregon (of which Digital Web Magazine is a sponsor). Hope to see you there!
