It was a difficult decision but I finally decided not to renew my .Mac account.
I started the account when Apple rolled out its iTools site a few years back, kept it when it became .Mac (and paid the “bargain” price of $49 per year) and continued to blindly pay the annual fee.
But an article on Subtraction reinforced all that I had been thinking about regarding the .Mac service. Sure the combined offerings are nice, especially iSync and the Backup software, but I found I never really used much of any of it. I have my own back up scheme that I’m happy using, about half a dozen emails of which I use two at most, and iDisk; that to be honest, I pretty much forgot I had.
Integration with iPhoto was nice and I used it for the annual holiday photo album but I’ve moved on to Flickr and with its wonderful Flickr iPhoto plug-in available, I can export directly to my Flickr album. Also, the ability to build your own web site, though okay, pales in comparison to the many open-source blogging tools (I currently use WordPress myself), blogging services and automated systems like RapidWeaver (which integrates nicely with all of Apple’s iLife offerings).
Now with that $99 dollars I’ll be saving, maybe I’ll purchase RapidWeaver (because sometimes you don’t want to “roll your own”), a bargin at $34.95, and get a $24.95 annual subscription to Flickr and still have $39 left. Now that’s a bargain I can live with!
